Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology, often referred to as “ortho-k”, is a non-surgical vision correction method that involves the use of specially designed gas-permeable contact lenses to reshape the cornea temporarily. These lenses are worn overnight, and while the wearer sleeps, they flatten the cornea which can reduce or eliminate refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness). Upon waking and removing the lenses, patient typically experience improved vision throughout the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Ortho-K is particularly popular among children and teens as a way to manage myopia progression. These lenses create a temporary corneal shape change that causes peripheral myopic defocus. The defocus signals to the eye helps to stop the signals of eye growth, which in turn slows the progression of myopia. Studies have shown that wearing Ortho-K lenses can slow down the progression of myopia. It is important to have a proper fitting and ongoing monitoring by an eye care professional to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Ortho-K can correct myopia up to -6.00 diopters of power and up to -1.75 diopters of astigmatism. There are no age restrictions for this lens, however, the myopia management is aspect is used for children up to the age of 16 years old.

Patient will complete a fitting evaluation each year to confirm proper fit and prescriptions of Ortho-K lenses and are monitored every 3 months with an in-office visit to ensure proper myopia management. Please call our office to find out more information regarding pricing and myopia management.
