Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a safe, non-invasive in-office treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target specific glands in the eyelids, as well as, various skin conditions. Unlike laser treatments that use a single wavelength of light, IPL, emits multiple wavelengths, allowing it to address a range of issues simultaneously.
Light pulses are used to reduce inflammation, unclog oil glands and eliminate bacteria/mites (such demodex) on the eyelids and reduce appearance of abnormal blood vessels. The biggest benefits are improvement in dry eye symptoms, reduced redness and rosacea.
Treatment session typically take approximately 30 minutes and most common sensation is described as a warm snapping sensation. The procedure uses a handheld devise to deliver pulses of light to the skin around the eyelids and face.
All patients should undergo a series of treatments, typically 4 treatments to start. Treatments are normally spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart in the beginning, then repeated as needed for maintenance. Maintenance is recommended every 6 to 12 months if needed.
This treatment has a very strong track record for safety and precision. Redness or flushing usually goes away in a few hours. Brown spots may turn slightly darker for a few days, and then flake off. Side effects are rare and generally temporary.
IPL is considered a long-lasting, effective alternative to eye drops. The specific risks and the suitability of these procedures for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation.
